1000 Island Luxury Residences

Client brief

Own What Matters

1000 Island Hotels & Resorts had already proven the model with Woods At Sasan — a sustainability and wellness retreat on an 8-acre mango orchard bordering Gir Forest National Park, Gujarat’s sanctuary for the Asiatic lion. On the adjacent site, the group set out to build something different: a 40-unit private residential club community, for an owner who wanted to live inside that philosophy, not just visit it.

The brief was as clear as it was demanding: this community would use its wealth in service of freedom, not accumulation — pursuing a more essential, deliberate way of living, while advancing themselves and the community around them in the process. Theirs is a discerning kind of luxury, one that filters out excess to make room for what’s genuinely worth having. Normal .’s task was to build a brand equally deliberate and purpose-driven in return: one that could earn the trust of a buyer who questions her own life habits and answers to something more meaningful than ownership for its own sake.

Who is Normal .

Normal . is an independent brand strategy and experience design practice built entirely in hospitality.

That grounding is what makes residence work like this different in Normal .’s hands. A residence foremost has to sell — it needs the commercial instincts of any branded real estate campaign. But Normal . brings something a real estate branding agency can’t: the brand experience discipline of hospitality, applied to design an experiential purchase rather than a transactional one. The result is a premium residence marketed to attract genuinely like-minded buyers — a community self-selected by values, not just by price point.

1000 Island Flow

Flow

The Big Idea, Normal . Method

Flow did double duty on this project — it’s both the residence’s Big Idea and the creative concept that shaped its architecture, which is a rare thing for one word to carry.

The idea borrows from yoga’s vinyasa — Sanskrit for “to place in a special way” — where a deliberate sequence of poses, modulated by breath, produces one continuous motion toward balance. Applied to a life, not just a body, Flow describes what happens when we step outside the low-grade urgency of daily survival: the ego loosens, worldly pursuits lose their pull, and what’s left is what actually matters — better still, shared.

Normal . carried that principle directly into the brand as well as architecture. Residence space planning sequences private spaces of refuge against public spaces built for shared experience — opening the indoors within private residences, while giving shelter and protection to outdoor communal space. Materials follow the same discipline: raw, unpolished, honest, unembellished — restrictions and limitations of the site accepted as they are, then interpreted through a modern design lens.

“Life-Changing Wellbeing”

Experience Principles, Normal . Method

The residence brings together independent, progressive minds to the healing environs of nature, in pursuit of life-changing wellbeing. Wellbeing isn’t a slogan here — it’s a holistic framework for living that joins the dots between physical, mental, and spiritual health.

Community Wellness Hub

Moments That Matter, Normal . Method

The residence shares and draws on the hotel’s wellness facilities, adding its own Community Wellness Hub — built to be simple but essential, with personalized service delivered exactly where it matters for residents: a fitness room, a private pool and sweat lodge scaled for solitude rather than a hotel-style pool deck, and a choreographed arrival that separates the Hub from the rest of the residence.

The Hub’s clearest expression of Flow is its Market, Market Cafe, and Community Kitchen — a single connected space built on one operating principle: Force-for-good. The Market runs as an essentialist mini-market of sustainable, wellness-focused goods; the Cafe serves what the Market sells, with no separate kitchen needed; and the Community Kitchen is the residence’s social heart — an island kitchen paired with a lounge-style Theatre space seating up to twenty, hosting artist residencies, food security talks, and resident-led farming.

Normal .’s work outlives the initial engagement

Proof of Impact

The residence is now under construction — and the concept has grown since the original brief. A permaculture community food forest has been added to the plan, extending Flow’s wellness pillars into a working ecological system the community farms and shares directly. What began as a purpose-driven brand concept is becoming a genuine purpose-led retreat residence, closer to lived practice than the original brief even asked for.

Most developers are selling square footage. This client is curating neighbors. He’s not chasing purchasers or investors — he’s building a lifestyle in the word’s actual sense, and betting that the right people will recognize themselves in it. It’s an idealistic thing to attempt. I happen to think it’s exactly the kind of idealism this industry needs more of.
