Rewrite the Island’s Rhythm

Every destination has a pulse. At Fari Islands, Normal . was engaged to find it again — not through a single campaign, but through a sustained program of brand experience designed to restore rhythm to an already exceptional place, and turn a stay into a lasting shift in how guests live.

Capella Hotel Group is the wholly owned hospitality subsidiary of Pontiac Land, and proprietor of numerous accolades — including being named World’s Best Hotel Brand in Travel + Leisure’s World’s Best Awards for three consecutive years, 2023–2025. In 2021, Capella launched Patina — a new lifestyle brand for a generation of travellers who are creative, design-literate, and drawn to deeper connection with the world around them. Its inaugural property, Patina Maldives, Fari Islands, is a striking addition to the Indian Ocean. Since the project, Patina has continued to grow: a second property, Patina Osaka, opened in May 2025 as the brand’s first urban hotel, with Tianjin and Sanya to follow.

Who is Normal .

Normal . is an independent brand strategy and experience design practice specializing in hospitality and lifestyle sector.

Increasingly, modern consumers expect more from the brands they choose; they seek immersive experiences to engage with the brand. Normal .’s expertise sits precisely there: not just the What, but the How.

Brand Identity is the What; Brand Experience is the How — what goes where, and what happens there. This is the discipline Normal . brought to Fari Islands: not a rebrand, but a sustained practice of experience design, built and rebuilt season over season by small, expert teams combining strategic insight, creative clarity and hands-on hospitality know-how.

New Life Habits

The Big Idea, Normal . Method

When technology wasn’t interrupting the natural rhythms of our body — when we lived by the seasons, by the sun and the moon — we were more in tune.

Fari Islands had the setting to hold that kind of attunement. What it needed was structure to sustain it. New Life Habits — Normal .’s framework for how guests unlearn old patterns and adopt new ones — became that structure, restoring rhythm to the island’s guest experience across three tempos.

Day to day, it shaped small, repeatable rituals — sunrise wellness sessions, zero-waste dining, permanent art installations — designed to feel less like hotel programming and more like a way of living guests could carry home.

Seasonally, it set a calendar of rotating creative collaborations, keeping the island in constant, deliberate motion rather than static, once-built spectacle.

And annually, it rose to its highest register: flagship festival events, gathering the whole rhythm into its most concentrated, lived form. That rhythm finds its clearest expression in two signature programs.

Experience as Healing

In the elevated state of mind, we ascend toward a more invigorating world, taking on a universal perspective — a notion of experience as medicine, playing a transformative role to ground, re-orientate and heal.

notion of experience as medicine takes root

From ancient spiritual practice to the frontiers of biohacking, countless traditions have sought to balance the relationship between our emotional, physical and intellectual states. As that field of knowledge widens, it is reshaping the way we travel — and the way a destination like Fari Islands is asked to perform for its guests.

One practice in growing demand: breathwork, a method of controlled breathing rooted in the ancient yogic exercise of Pranayama. In an elevated state of mind, the practitioner ascends toward a more invigorating world, taking on a wider, more universal perspective. It is here that the notion of experience as medicine takes root — medicine that grounds, re-orientates, and heals.

For a weekend in June 2023, marking the resort’s second anniversary, Normal . brought this notion to life at Fari Islands — gathering a group of leaders in psychosocial health, nutritional science and esoteric practice for Experience as Healing. Across sound healing rituals, breathwork sessions, alcoholic beverage masterclasses and sleep clinic, guests unfolded and opened hidden doors — through inner journeys and outer ones — seeking healing in its most direct, embodied form.

The program was open to every guest on property, not ticketed to a select few — seasoned practitioners and first-timers moving through the same rituals, side by side.

I love the notion of New Life Habits. The only way to build new habits is in a different environment, not at home where your habits are entrenched.

Cosmopolitan Ocean

How does a tiny atoll in the middle of the Indian Ocean explain the thriving cosmopolitan culture of today? To understand the present, you have to go back to the beginning.

A four-day festival of arts, music and new knowledge

The Indian Ocean has been a zone of human interaction throughout history — the long millennia of trade networks reaching inland to Africa and outward to the Middle East, India and China, driving deep material, intellectual and cultural exchange. The peoples of these ports had more in common with one another than we might think today.

This cosmopolitan world is not only a story of cities on the shores, but of the sea itself. In an age of rising sea levels and climate change, Normal . chose to deliberately bring the ocean back to the centre of the story — not as a passive backdrop to human movement, but as the theatre of human connection.

That October, Normal . reimagined Fari Islands as the site of what might once have been the first cross-cultural festival in human history — an annual celebration that drew diverse travellers from across the ancient world to sing, dance and feast, finding in stimulation of body, mind and spirit a new sanctuary. Cosmopolitan Ocean brought artists, healing practitioners and entertainers to Fari Islands to reinterpret that story: a four-day festival of arts, music and new knowledge, celebrating both the legacy and the future of oceanic cosmopolitanism.

Guests experienced a bespoke fragrance launch with Haeckels (since rebranded Dulcie), an ocean-plastics art installation, a debut apparel collaboration, and performances building a metaphorical bridge between the globalized communities of today and the ancient Indian Ocean.

When we think of the ocean, we usually see it as a passive backdrop to the human movement. In the age of rising sea levels and climate change, we wanted to deliberately bring the ocean to the centre of our perspective – as the theatre of human connection.
