The following is an excerpt from Wellbeing Brand Experience concept statement written for the proposed Luxury Collection Tokyo (March 2025).
The water cradles me in its warmth, a cocoon of vapour that feels like an embrace against the crisp, biting air. I’m submerged to the shoulders, every muscle lulled into a quiet rhythm by the onsen’s mineral-rich water. The heat seeps into my skin, pulling me further and deeper into the pool. Above the waterline, my face tingle with the coolness of the evening air, a sharp contrast that is both stimulating and meditative. It is as if my body exists in two worlds at once—one of fire, the other of ice.
A gentle breeze brushes across my face, carrying wisps of steam that swirl and vanish in the twilight. My breath forms faint clouds in the frosty air, rising to mingle with the steam before disappearing into the purple sky. The air smells faintly of earth and burnt wood, grounding the otherworldliness of this moment. A silence deepens around me, the kind that seems to amplify the gentle crackle of water gushing out from the onsen spring. The world is hushed, its heartbeat slowed to match my own.
Then, snow begins to fall. At first, it drifts down as if time itself has slowed, each flake descending in a straight, deliberate path. They are impossibly small and intricate and linger for a heartbeat and dissolve into tiny, fleeting beads of water before surrendering to the heat radiating from my skin.
I open my eyes. I see two fellow bathers, submerged in their own tranquil reveries. They are islands of stillness, their expressions softened by the quiet intimacy of this shared ritual. Across the water, my gaze meets that of a guy who offers a gentle nod, his face creasing with the faintest trace of a smirk – a moment of connection so subtle, yet so profoundly intimate. For a moment, I feel infinite, part of something ancient yet utterly present, sharing this rare intersection of solitude and community.
Then, snow begins to fall. At first, it drifts down as if time itself has slowed, each flake descending in a straight, deliberate path.
Snow is heavy now. It is almost insistent, layering on the rocks that frame the pool and on the edges of the wooden deck. Time has become elastic, stretching and folding into itself. I no longer know how long I’ve been here, only that the hour I booked is slipping away far too quickly. For a moment, I close my eyes and will time to pause. The world can wait.
